When the base period ends on a weekend, mail service yields a deadline one or two days early.

Case contract

Stipulated rule: exclude the trigger day, count every calendar day, and if the last day is a Saturday, Sunday or listed holiday continue to the next day that is none of these. When service was by mail or by leaving with the clerk, 3 days are added after the period would otherwise expire, and the last-day extension is applied again. Electronic and hand service add nothing.

Why this case matters

Docketing systems compute filing and response deadlines from trigger events; a wrong date can forfeit a right.
