Diffstat path truncation: the directory separator is dropped after the ellipsis · case 01

Truncated paths read "...file.py" instead of ".../file.py", hiding that a directory was cut.

ROOT CAUSE

The cut starts after the slash instead of at it.

VERIFIED REPAIR

Cut the tail at the first slash and keep the slash.

Unsuccessful approach: Cutting at the last slash discards more of the path than necessary.

Case contract

A path longer than width is shown as "..." plus its last width-3 characters, further shortened to start at the first "/" inside that tail when there is one (keeping the slash). Paths not longer than width are unchanged.

Why this case matters

Narrow terminals truncate long paths in diffstat output; the rule keeps the most informative part of the path.

Verification & scope

A deterministic, bounded teaching model of one diff, patch or merge rule with stipulated conventions; it is not a production diff or version-control implementation and makes no claim of conformance to any specific tool. This reproducer isolates one failure mechanism. Results cover the supplied fixtures. Variants within a family share a test contract and should remain grouped when constructing evaluation splits. Related mechanisms with a shared evaluation_group must also remain together; these controlled models are not independent production incidents.
